Abyssal Plains

cedemar.jpg

The greatest depths of the ocean are not a desert in which only very few species can survive. Species are well-adapted and thriving, and reproduction and speciation and take place just as in shallower environments. A characteristic trait of abyssal ecosystems is the high number of rare species-  many creatures observed by the Census of Diversity of Abyssal Marine Life (CeDAMar) were found only once or twice in the broad swathes seen in the map.
