The Census of Marine Life was a global network of researchers in more than 80 nations engaged in a 10-year scientific initiative to assess and explain the diversity, distribution, and abundance of life in the oceans.  The world's first comprehensive census of the past, present, and future of life in the oceans was released in October 2010.

From sampling microbes to tagging predators as they cross the Pacific, Census project have created a new portrait of the past, present and future of our oceans. The map shows the study regions of projects that spanned the globe.

The Floor of the PacificThe Mapping and Visualization team developed computational techniques that have allowed Census scientists to analyze and prepare their data. As the Census has moved towards it's conclusion, the Team has produced information graphics and maps for books and journal articles.
