Visualizing the Census of Marine Life
The CoML Mapping and Visualization project is based at the Marine Geospatial Ecology Lab at the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences at Duke University.
Google Earth now has a Census of Marine Life layer

The Google Earth 5, released on February 2, 2009 (download here) includes many enhancements to ocean content. The Education & Outreach and Mapping & Visualization teams created a layer of Census of Marine Life articles. If you have comments or suggestions for articles, photos, video or visualizations to be included in the next update, let us know.
Mapping and Visualization at the February Long Beach meeting
The Census of Marine Life Mapping & Visualization team will be running workshops and a "Doctor's Office" sessions from Monday through Wednesday at the Long Beach All-Program meeting.

Goals
- The need to communicate to a wide range of audiences is a fundamental goal of the Census of Marine Life. To better achieve these goals we need to develop and implement common geographic and visualization tools.
- The ability to synthesize, map and visualize our data collections and the analytical findings from each Census project is critical to the success of the entire Census endeavor.
- Compelling, intuitive, and consistent mapping and visualization products are essential to communicating the message of each Census project to the scientific and popular media.
- Expanding these objectives is the charge for the Mapping & Visualization (M&V) Team led by Dr. Patrick Halpin’s Marine Geospatial Ecology Lab at Duke University.
Partnerships
- The M&V team will foster partnerships with industry leaders in mapping and scientific visualization, including: The National Geographic Society, Google, and Environmental Sciences Research Institute (ESRI).
Census-Wide Synthesis
Synthesis of visual products across the Census will be coordinated with:
- a Common Technical Guide
- Mapping CoML Activities through Time and Space
- Geo-referencing Multimedia.
Project-level Support
- Surveys, Workshops and Consultation
- Census Mapping and Visualization Website
- Spatial Gallery
- Tools, Documentation
Additional Services
- Interactive Mapper
- Web Services for Static and Dynamic Oceanographic Data
Visualization Experiments
- Realms to Globe
- Network Linkages
- Exploratory Data Analysis
